Welcome to the Web pages of the Oxford Branch
of the
British Cactus and Succulent Society (Zone 8)

We invite you to browse the contents, and hope that there is something of interest for you here. If you are local to Oxford then please also come along to our monthly Branch meetings (you can find details under the item "Events Programme"). Most meetings centre on a talk by a guest speaker. If you would like advice on anything to do with cacti or succulents then our members will be glad to help. For more information please contact Cathy Darbon on 01993 881926. Also see the "Contact Us" page.

The Branch newsletter, Oxotica, is distributed free to members twice a year.

NEXT BRANCH MEETING

Thursday August 28th

GILLIAN EVISON
"Retro Chic"

What can I say about our Vice Chairman? I have known Gillian for many years and remember her showing in the Junior Section of the National when it was held at Luton. She is a very experienced speaker and a great photographer, as I am sure you will all verify from looking at the branch web-site, and has this year been asked to photograph at the National Show.

(See "Events Programme" for general information about the meetings)

SEPTEMBER MEETING

Thursday September 25th

GRAHAM HOLE
"Gymnocalyciums"

A few of you will have experienced this talk before, as I believe it was the first that Graham gave to Oxford branch ??? years ago, but it has been updated and will include many species not in the original. A very old friend of mine, going back to the early eighties, his plants must be seen to be believed, however he is very selective in the plants he keeps, being at one stage a member of the Chileans, and also an original member of David Hunt's team when he started writing the Lexicon, although he did not stay until the finish. He will be talking again on "Gymnocalyciums".
PLEASE NOTE - Gillian's pictures from the 2008 Oxford Branch Cactus show are now accessible through "Shows" in the Contents list

Mr George Wheeler

It is with sadness that we have learnt of the death of George Wheeler, suddenly, earlier this May. He served as Secretary of the Branch for a long period until November 1994, and in his prime was well known as a first-rate grower and showman. He had been living in sheltered accommodation in Brill. Our condolences go to his family.

John Watmough
